Avian congress hears of Primorsky Aquarium penguins

Primorsky Aquarium specialists shared their expertise in acclimation of Humboldt penguins and captive husbandry of this species at the Second All-Russian Ornithological Congress held from January 30-February 4 in Saint Petersburg. A poster presentation from the Primorsky Aquarium was given by Olga Demina, Specialist at the Ornithology Department.

“Over the five years the species has called the Aquarium home, we have gained vast experience in the care of these interesting birds – from acclimating newly arrived individuals to a new habitat to breeding them,” said Olga Demina. “Our penguin family is growing, and this proves that the birds are kept in excellent conditions. We have communicated our results to colleagues from across the country.”

The Second All-Russian Ornithological Congress has aimed to present and discuss both findings from the most recent and innovative studies conducted by Russian ornithologists and information, which is important to progress in world ornithology, provided by foreign counterparts.

The congress brought together more than 500 participants and featured 20 symposia, 3 roundtable discussions, upwards of 100 posters and over 200 oral presentations.
