New stingray joins Aquarium collection

A gorgeous marine predator has been added to the Primorsky Aquarium collection: this is a ribbontail stingray (Taeniura lymma) ― a species new to the scientific and educational center. The tropical fish has a striking appearance, with bright blue spots on the light brown body and huge yellow, very expressive, eyes.

The newcomer has quickly settled in and has already made his food preferences clear: he eagerly eats salmon, squid, scallops, mussels and shrimps but rejects white-fleshed fish. Since the stingray is still very young, he is being kept under constant monitoring in the Science and Acclimation Building. In a couple of months when the baby increases in size he will be relocated to a larger tank.

In addition to the ribbontail stingray, ten more species of rays call the Primorsky Aquarium home. Among the predatory inhabitants of the underwater tunnel and the Oceanic Abyss exhibit there are flapnose rays, whitespotted eagle rays, round ribbontail rays, honeycomb stingrays, pink whiprays, whip stingrays and leopard whiprays. These amazing creatures can also be seen in the Tropical Rain Forest exhibit that features such species as the white-blotched river stingray, bigtooth river stingray and pearl freshwater stingray.
