Primorsky Aquarium celebrates Baikal seals’ birthday

March 15 is International Day of Action for the Seals and just four days later, on March 19, the Primorsky Aquarium celebrates the birthday of our three Baikal seals. This year Tuchka and Businka turned seven years old and their friend Alph, eleven.

Honoring the seals on their birthday has become a long-term tradition at the Aquarium. Darya Prokhorenko works as a Lead Specialist at the Marine Mammal Department of the Dolphinarium. Every year on that day, she says, the pool and the deck are decorated with a festive сongratulations banner and this year also with balloons. A sign at the exhibit tells guests how old our animals are now. A real “cake” with candles is a culmination of the day! The recipe uses only one, but a seal’s favourite ingredient, fresh pink salmon.

On 19th March visitors could enjoy seal feeding presentations three times instead of the usual twice a day schedule: at 10:00 AM, 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. The birthday boy and girls displayed the whole range of behaviors they had learned up to that point.

The keepers were together with Tuchka, Businka and Alph throughout the day and the guests had a great opportunity to ask them all kinds of questions about these absolutely adorable creatures!
