Primorsky Aquarium Celebrates World Wetlands Day
On February 3, 2018, the Prymorsky Aquarium organized celebrating the World Wetlands Day for children and their parents to raise awareness about the important role that the wetlands play in the environment and in our lives.
This entertaining and environmentally educational festival prepared a scientific tale and cartoons about wetland dwellers on a loop for kids of five-seven years, a captivating route through the Rivers and Lakes Exhibit and lectures on frogs and water birds for children of 13 and upward. There were also a creative workshop “Assemble a Lotus” and a theatre masterclass “Merry Swamp” prepared for children. Playing roles of fishes, birds, and other wetlands’ dwellers, children do exercises for development of imagination, solidarity, and sociability.
“A word-picture evoked by Russian fairy tales from childhood does a view of swamps as a gloomy, dark, and hopeless place,” Natalia Korobka, specialist of the Environment Education Department says. “However, that’s not true at all. Life, rich and diverse, seethes in the wetlands. Both kids and their parents have a chance to know more about it. Here is the first interesting fact! One of the wetlands of international importance is located in Primorsky Krai – it is Lake Khanka. You can see the lake’s inhabitants in the Primorsky Aquarium’s exhibits.”
About World Wetlands Day
- World Wetlands Day has been annually held on February 2 since 1997 to commemorate the anniversary of signing the Ramsar Convention in the Iranian city of Ramsar in 1971. The convention is a treaty on the preservation and sustainable use of wetlands that play a crucial role in the ecosystem.
- The Ramsar Convention established the List of Wetlands of International Importance for conservation and sustainable utilization of wetlands, recognizing the fundamental ecological function of wetlands and their economic, cultural, scientific, and recreational value. As defined by the Convention, “wetland should be selected for the List on account of their international significance in term of ecology, botany, zoology, limnology or hydrology.” This List contains 35 wetlands of the Russian Federation including Lake Khanka.
