Prymorsky Aquarium Has Explored the Beach Litter

The Primorsky Aquarium’s Ecological Education Department together with senior high school students of the Boarding School for Gifted Children belonging to the Vladivostok State University of Economics and Service and with OOO EcoInvestProject (LLC) have monitored the human-created beach litter pollution of the Zhitkova Peninsula coast. The monitoring was conducted within the framework of the Ocean Without Borders Project that has been realized under the Department of Natural Resources Management and Environmental Protection for Primorsky Krai guidance, with support of the Northwest Pacific Region Environmental Cooperation Center (NPEC) and “OOO EcoInvestProject” (LLC) represented by Sergey Rybalko, the Director.

The project has been carried out since 2014 and so it has developed methods. Participating in the project more than once, schoolchildren expertly instructed the Aquarium’s staff in the matters of laying out the areas, sorting and categorizing the litter according to eight types such as plastic, glass, rubber, etc., and identifying countries of origin. The results of counted and weighed by the categories litter items were entered into a table.

It has been surveyed 300 m2 of the coastline, collected 100 kg of the beach litter including 75 kg of the waste scrap. The analysis of the litter collected will take into account description of the beach surveyed including geographical overview, data on storms, weather conditions, coastal rivers, and the beach attendance. The monitoring results will be sent to the NPEC.

Because of heavy pollution of all coastal line, additional 200 m2 of the coast were cleared out from the litter.

As noted by participants of the project, we each should reduce using plastic items, take out the litter only in the designated area, and collect waste separately to stop pollution. Only our joint efforts can protect the environment and save nature for our descendants.
