The Aquarium participates in celebration honoring 30 years of Russia-South Korea diplomatic relations

At the Primorsky Aquarium, Branch of the A. V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center of Marine Biology, Far Eastern Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences, an exhibition has opened to mark the 30th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Korea.

The exhibition’ s opening ceremony was attended by Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Vladivostok Oh Sung Hwan, Military Attaché at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Moscow Choi Hyoungsuk and Naval Attaché at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Moscow Lee Sung Ro.

Participants in the formal opening of the exhibition also included Corresponding Member of the RAS, Professor of the RAS, Holder of Habilitation degree in Medicine, Provisional Director of the NSCMB FEB RAS Inessa Dyuizen, Head of the International Relations Division at the Primorsky Territory Department of International Cooperation Olga Shakirova, Head of the Representative Office of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vladivostok Andrey Brovarets and Head of the Department for International Military Cooperation of the Russian Pacific Fleet Sergey Gorbatyuk.

While welcoming the guests, the Aquarium’s Director Elena Ramus stressed that Vladivostok was a site of sociocultural crossing between Europe and Asia, and that it was quite symbolic that the Primorsky Aquarium had become one of the venues for celebrating the jubilee of Russia and South Korea diplomatic relations.

“I would like to thank the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Vladivostok and particularly Consul General, Mister Oh Sung Hwan, for their support for and active promotion of tourism cooperation between our countries. Statistically, in 2019 it was South Koreans who comprised the most numerous group of visitors to the Primorsky Aquarium from the Asia-Pacific countries”, said Elena Ramus.

During the ceremony, a model of the historic Korean ironclad battleship “Kobukson” handed over to the Primorsky Aquarium by the Korea Military Academy was opened for display. Recorded in Korean history as “combat turtle”, this ship is one of the main national symbols.

“Due to the fact that a model of the “Kobukson” will be displayed for the first time in a foreign country, a decision has been made to add the Primorsky Aquarium to the list of notable places in Vladivostok which are related to the history of Korea,” said Oh Sung Hwan in his welcome address.

The Consul General also expressed his confidence that the joint projects which were implemented in the frame of celebrating the 30th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Korea would strengthen mutual trust and friendship between our nations.

On account of the anniversary events in 2020 and as a token of friendship between Kangwon province of the Republic of Korea and Primorsky Territory, the audio tour of the Primorsky Aquarium has been translated into Korean, recorded and presented to the scientific and educational center by the province’s authorities. When the opening ceremony was over, its attendees walked through the Aquarium's exhibits, listening to the audio guides in Korean and Russian.
