PRIMORSKY AQUARIUM IS ONE OF THE WORLD’S LARGEST SCIENTIFIC AND EDUCATIONAL COMPLEXES

Official opening of the Scientific and Educational Complex Primorsky Aquarium FEB RAS took place on 3 September 2016 with the participation of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and in presence of the Prime Minister of Japan Shindzo Abe and other top-level officials. Being built by Vladimir Putin’s order, Primorsky Aquarium became a part of the National Scientific Center of Marine Biology, the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (NSCMB FEB RAS) -  the first Aquarium in Russia included into the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Primorsky Aquarium, being the third largest in the world has total interior space exceeding 37,000 m2. About five football pitches could be placed in the Aquarium’s building designed to resemble a slightly open white mollusk shell. A left side wing of the building houses a main tank with a 70-meter underwater tunnel; a dolphinarium with an aquatic arena and 800-seat viewing stands occupies the right side wing.

135 tanks of the Aquarium’s nine permanent exhibits hold 15,000 m3 of water. Some tanks due to their enormousness had to be installed before the Aquarium building’s roof and some walls were erected.

This location is home for representatives of all oceans and the climatic zones of the Earth. They are kept in quarantine in the Scientific-and-Adaptation building’s tanks before moving into the Aquarium’s exhibits. Scientists have the opportunity to carry out their research on the spot, without being in long-term expeditions. In the Aquarium, there are five research and two production laboratories, two laboratories for schoolchildren that afford ground for fundamental and applied research, and educational activities.

The Primorsky Aquarium offers tours of exhibits and show in the dolphinarium for visitors, classes for students and schoolchildren, and lectures, exhibitions, festivals of sciences, and charity events. There are special classes for disabled children allowing them to meet with the marine inhabitants of the Aquarium. In addition, members of the Aquarium’s volunteer center organize ecological and socially important actions, do creative works and perform their own studies. The Primorsky Aquarium is the space to begin a journey to Science where everybody can make a discovery.
