Typhoon Maysak struck Vladivostok last year. Among other damages, it affected the pines planted on the territory of the Primorsky Aquarium. They were buffeted by wind and burnt by salt. Many branches seemed to die off.
28.07.2021 – Listen to the seals: Marine biologist Igor Katin is sure that the animal rights support should be science-based
Six seals and four beluga whales live permanently in the pools of Primorsky Aquarium. They take part in the marine mammal sensory system research program and Igor Katin, Scientific Head of the Laboratory of Marine Mammals, National Scientific Center of Marine Biology, calls them ‘staff members’.
26.07.2021 – National Scientific Center of Marine Biology launches large-scale expedition to explore deep-sea ecosystems of the Emperor Seamount Chain
On July 17, 2021, the scientific team from the A. V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center of Marine Biology FEB RAS went to a chain of seamounts, known as the Emperor Seamount Chain, aboard the research vessel Akademik M.A. Lavrentyev (cruise 94) to study deep-sea ecosystems in the central Pacific Ocean.
19.07.2021 – The Aquarium becomes home for jellyfish new to Russian waters
The hydrozoan jellyfish Tima Formosa has been caught in Russian waters for the first time! Now you can see it on display at the Primorsky Aquarium. Aquarists hope to breed this cnidarian that still has no common name in Russian.
01.07.2021 – Change of the Dolphinarium’s operating days
In view of the worsening COVID-19 situation and the necessity to impose additional safety restrictions, the demonstration of marine mammals’ skills at the Primorsky Aquarium will be conducted four days a week: on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, starting on July 6, 2021. Performances will take place at the same hours – 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Advance tickets for July 6 will be refunded automatically.
08.06.2021 – June 8: World Ocean Day
June 8 is annually celebrated as World Ocean Day. It is one of the most important days to the Primorsky Aquarium, along with its birthday. It is worth reminding that this year marks the 5th anniversary of the Aquarium’s official opening.
04.06.2021 – “Aquarium as a Way to Explore the World”: Primorsky Aquarium biologists participate in an international conference
The International Conference “Aquarium as a Way to Explore the World”, which is Russia’s oldest forum for aquarists, was held on May 14-16, 2021, in Krasnogorsk, Moscow Province. The event was attended by experts from 200 cities and towns and 17 countries across the world: Russia, Australia, Belarus, Belgium, Croatia, Estonia, Finland, Great Britain, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Ukraine, and the USA.

Members of an environmental biology club called the Belyok, which is the first stage of the Growing up at the Aquarium project, are getting ready to take part in the International Ecological Conference “Man and Biosphere”, which is hosted by the Federal Scientific Center of the East Asia Terrestrial Biodiversity FEB RAS (the FSC EATB FEB RAS).

17.05.2021 – The Primorsky Aquarium observes Environmental Education Day
May 12 marks the annual celebration of Environmental Education Day - a holiday dedicated to cultivating environmental literacy - in Russia. It is our holiday since in its educational activities the Primorsky Aquarium focuses on teaching the public about the environment and the importance of caring for it.
30.04.2021 – Tickets to the Primorsky Aquarium go on sale for all dates of May holidays
Advance e-tickets to the Primorsky Aquarium are currently offered through May 10. Tickets are sold online to maintain appropriate health and safety standards in the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic and to avoid people flocking to the ticket office.
29.04.2021 – Marine biology in the 21st century: an international conference will take place in Vladivostok
The A. V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center of Marine Biology FEB RAS and the Primorsky Aquarium will jointly convene an international scientific conference, Marine Biology in the 21st Century: Achievements and Development Outlook, from October 6 to 8, 2021 in Vladivostok.
05.04.2021 – Crown-shaped jellies will appear at the Aquarium
For the first time, visitors can see polyps of the coronate jellyfish from the genus Nausithoe in the exhibits of the Primorsky Aquarium. The culture of this jellyfish is a new phase of the jellyfish breeding program which has been successfully run at the scientific and educational center for a number of years.
30.03.2021 – The Aquarium participates in an international environmental initiative
The Primorsky Aquarium has joined Earth Hour, a global environmental event. On March 27, the exterior and landscape lighting of the scientific and educational center was turned off for one hour - from 8:30 p.m. till 9:30 p.m.
15.03.2021 – Just like a grown-up: spotted seal Jupiter turns two
Spotted seal Jupiter – Jup for short – has celebrated his second birthday. The first marine mammal born at the Primorsky Aquarium, Jupiter is a pup unique in many ways, and his story is the world’s first case of a baby spotted seal being delivered and reared in artificial settings but in entire accordance with biological laws.
