Now tiny Agassiz’s snailfish (Liparis agassizii) are bearing a weak resemblance to adult members of the species: they have huge eyes and completely lack a characteristic sucking disk on the belly.

The Growing up at the Aquarium project continues its work: at present, learning sessions of all four project stages - the environmental biology club “Belyok”, the ecology club “Sea Guardians”, “Ichthyology Club” and “AQUAlaboratory” - are conducted online.

31.03.2020 – Baikal seals learn painting and celebrate their birthday
A large salmon cake decorated with smelt has been presented to the Aquarium’s Baikal seals. Last week Businka and Tuchka turned four; Alf, who is older than the female seals, turned eight.When the freshwater seals were small, their trainers decided to celebrate their birthdays on one day and thus started a new tradition at the Primorsky Aquarium. Baikal seals learn throughout their life, and the number of their achievements increases with each passing year.
21.03.2020 – The Aquarium is closed to the public from March 21
Dear friends, the Primorsky Aquarium and its premises will be temporarily closed to the public from March 21 in accordance with the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation order regarding the measures to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus in Russia.
20.03.2020 – Specific aspects of taming sea predators
Biologists of the Primorsky Aquarium have tamed tawny nurse sharks; the process took them just a few weeks. The predators – two females from Indonesia – arrived in Vladivostok on the last day of 2019. Acclimation of animals to a new environment is a demanding process, and it has required efforts of ichthyologists, water chemists and fish pathologists. Then the fish were placed under the care of scuba diving biologists whose goal was to adapt them to another mode of feeding, that is, to make the sharks go from hunting for prey to taking food from human hands without biting them.
11.03.2020 – Offspring in keratinous cases: zebra shark lays eggs
Zebra sharks have bred for the first time at the Primorsky Aquarium: a female shark has laid 5 eggs, and according to the biologists of the scientific and educational center, this is just the beginning.

Enjoy a family day at the Primorsky Aquarium on Monday, March 9. The facility will be open to the public during its normal working hours - from 10:00 a.m. till 8:00 p.m.
05.03.2020 – Hot-tempered eggs: bobtail squids can alter their colour even before they are born
The biologists at the Primorsky Aquarium have obtained the first brood of the butterfly bobtail squid (Sepiola birostrata) – a tiny cephalopod found in the Sea of Japan.

New residents have been added to the Small Coral Reef – when exploring the fish tanks of the exhibit, you can meet several species of tropical sea urchins that look completely different from each other.

Another breeding program held by the Aquarium has become a success: its common hourglass tree frogs (Polypedates cruciger) – an exotic species from the island of Sri Lanka – have produced their first brood.

The Primorsky Aquarium has new additions to its collection - two tawny nurse sharks (Nebrius ferrugineus). The predators have arrived in Vladivostok from Indonesia. Now our biologists and fish pathologists are adapting the tropical residents to life in the Aquarium.

Ornithologists at the Primorsky Aquarium strongly believe that their charges – Humboldt penguins – require all-round enrichment and provide the seabirds not only with physical activity but also with “art classes”. Thus, the penguins have mastered finger painting.
